Menstrual Hygiene Day: CHHELD Calls for Collective Action to End Period Poverty and Build a Period Friendly World

The Centre for Human Rights, Health, Ethnic Harmony and Livelihood Development (CHHELD) joins global voices to commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025, themed “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”

This annual observance underscores the urgent need to eliminate the barriers that millions of girls and women face in managing their periods with dignity—barriers rooted in poverty, stigma, poor infrastructure, and policy neglect.

At CHHELD, we believe that menstrual health is a human right and a critical component of health equity, gender equality, and sustainable development. Through our initiatives, we continue to witness the impact of empowering communities with access to menstrual products, adequate WASH facilities, and accurate, stigma-free information.

One of our flagship project, the ALAMH Project (Advocacy for Legislative Action on Menstrual Health), demonstrates how local action and policy engagement can go hand in hand. Through ALAM-H, we have:

• Advocated for menstrual health, WASH infrastructure in schools and public spaces to be mainstreamed into public policy and local development agendas
• Trained community members and peer educators to deliver culturally sensitive menstrual education
• Distributed reusable sanitary pads to vulnerable populations
• Facilitated youth-led campaigns and community dialogues that challenge menstrual stigma

The ALAM-H Project reflects our commitment to strengthening local voices and pushing for legislative change that guarantees menstrual equity for all.

This Menstrual Hygiene Day, we urge:

• Policy makers to integrate menstrual health into health, education, and gender policies
• Governments at all levels to invest in free or subsidized menstrual products, especially in schools and rural areas
• Private sector actors to contribute through innovation, funding, and workplace policies
• Development partners and donors to support community-based menstrual health initiatives
• The media and civil society to help break the silence and normalize menstruation through awareness campaigns

No one should miss out on education, work, or life opportunities simply because of their period. Together, we can dismantle period poverty, end stigma, and build a truly #PeriodFriendlyWorld.

Join us. Take action. Stand for menstrual equity.
