On March 8, 2025, in celebration of International Women’s Day, the Centre for Health and Human Empowerment for Livelihood and Development (CHHELD) hosted a powerful virtual conversation under the global theme “Accelerate Action.” This timely gathering brought together advocates, supporters, and changemakers to spotlight three critical pillars: menstrual health, women’s leadership, and mental well-being.
With support from Rise Up, CHHELD continues to raise its voice and drive meaningful conversations that push for policy reform and community action, particularly within Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria—where our current menstrual health advocacy project is making significant strides. The virtual dialogue opened with a reflection on the core belief that empowering a woman empowers a village. This powerful truth laid the foundation for the day’s discussions—emphasizing that investing in women’s health and rights not only transforms individual lives but also ripples out to uplift entire communities. Key highlights include;
- Menstrual Health and Period Poverty; Participants discussed the urgency of sustainable menstrual health solutions, with a focus on:
- Period poverty and its effects on girls’ education and dignity.
- The need for access to affordable and eco-friendly menstrual products.
- Combating stigma and misconceptions around menstruation.
CHHELD emphasized that menstruation is natural—not shameful, and called for a collective effort to build a society where no girl or woman suffers due to lack of menstrual resources or cultural silence.
- The Power of Policy Advocacy; Our team shared updates on CHHELD’s ongoing Advocacy for Legislative Action on Menstrual Health in Rivers State, including efforts to:
- Push for inclusive state policies.
- Engage with community leaders and lawmakers in Khana LGA.
- Mobilize support from grassroots to government level to address the menstrual needs of girls and women.
- Women’s Leadership and Mental Health; The conversation extended to the importance of mental health and women leadership in achieving gender equity. Speakers highlighted how:
- Mental health support must be integrated into women’s empowerment programs.
- Leadership opportunities for women—especially in rural areas—can transform societal norms and break cycles of inequality.
We appreciate Rise Up and all our supporters who continue to stand with us as we accelerate action for a healthier, more just world for women and girls.
