Centre for Human Rights, Health, Ethnic Harmony and Livelihood Development (CHHELD) in partnership with Centre for Creative Development Strategies (CCDS) and other organizations/institutions organized a one-day sensitization program to commemorate 2023 World Menstrual Hygiene Day (WMHD2023) The theme is “Making menstruation a normal fact of life by 2030”. The sensitization program was aimed at educating students, both male and female about menstruation, importance of using eco-friendly sanitary pads and donation of pads to females.

The sensitization program started with a breakout session where the female attendees carried out a survey to ascertain their knowledge on menstrual hygiene and other challenges associated with menstruation, while the session for male students was facilitated by Mr. Onyeuche Godson. The male attendees were taught about menstruation, and how to relate and support females during menstruation. At the end of the breakout session, the participants were educated with a short movie on menstruation titled: Period. End of Sentence. The movie showed attendees the various challenges girls face during menstruation and the various taboos associated with menstruation. The movie left attendees with various questions about better ways to manage menstruation and how to end the stigma and discrimination associated with menstruation.

Mrs. Nancy Iheduru, the Executive Director of CCDS in her presentation “Menstrual Hygiene Management” educated attendees on ways to manage menstruation, pre-menstrual syndrome, period calculation, period stigma, and dealing with painful menstruation. It was a call for young persons to be well knowledgeable about menstruation and how to be menstrual justice advocates, in order to debunk myths and misconceptions, and further promote healthy and normal conversations on menstruation. The program gave students the opportunity to ask questions and gain clarifications on the subject matter.

The high point of the event was the donation of reusable and disposable sanitary pads to females and males in attendance. CHHELD in partnership with CCDS donated over 80 eco-friendly washable and reusable pads and Angel Sanitary pads donated over 350 pads to attendees. The event came to an end with group photographs of students, teachers, school administrators and other females in attendance.
