British Council’s EU-ACT Peer Learning  Session (Group 1)

Group 1 Peer Learning Session which was attended by Chukwu Ikechukwu of CHHELD on 26th July 2022 at Women Rights and Empowerment Initiatives (WORI), 16/20 School Road, Rumuodumanya, Port Harcourt.

The topic of discussion was titled: Monitoring and Evaluation (M and E) in A Project Circle. The section was anchored by the ED of WORI Cynthia Onwuka support Dr. Kay Nwanyawu.

The purpose of the Peer Learning Session is to encourage learning from one another; i.e members of Group 1 session. In this case the learning was on M and E.

Cynthia Onwuka defined M and E as an assessment of the key indicators that shows the progress of a project circle. She further emphasized the need to identify key indicators at the stage of planning projects.  The need for indicators to be local was also emphasized, as this will ensure that such indicators are relevant to the project and set objective (s). She pointed out that key indicators in a project could be behavioral change etc. Types of indicators was listed as numerical and non numerical indicators. Numerical indicator determines the quantity of each type of response, they tell the scope of the project, the NO of persons reached etc. Numerical indicators are expressed as count, percentage etc. Non numerical indicators reflects complex social concepts that make for better understanding of the ‘How’ and ‘Why’ of a situation such as the impact of a programme. Non numerical indicators can be expressed as quotes, themes, paraphrases, summary etc. It was equally noted that indicators must be measurable.

Through the interaction sessions, concepts as output, input and outcome were discussed.  Furthermore, it was noted that in some cases, M and E has move from M&E to MEL (Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning).

Those in attendance collectively agreed that the next Peer Learning Session should hold on Friday the 19th of August, or Friday 26th of August if the 19th coincides with an EU programme.
